Portuguese international striker Nuno Gomes recently left Benfica after spending about 13 years with the club over two stints, and now it appears he may be headed to MLS.

La Aficion, a sports news arm of newspaper Milenio of Monterrey, Mexico, is reporting that Gomes is considering a move to Major League Soccer along with another offer from Switzerland and one from Puebla FC of the Mexican Primera Division.

The quote above stresses that nothing is set in stone with Puebla, although they may be the frontrunner for Gomes’s services. It mentions that Puebla received a call from a Miami-based agent who asked if the team would be interested in Gomes; the agent also represents players like Pepe, Kaká, and Cristiano Ronaldo. It says Gomes is also considering two more offers, one from Switzerland and one from MLS.

Several teams in Major League Soccer could use the goal-scoring prowess of Gomes, who scored 125 goals for Benfica in 293 league appearances over his two stints with them. He also has scored 29 goals in 77 appearances with the Portuguese national team; four came at EURO 2000, one each at EURO 2004 and 2008, and one at the 2006 World Cup against hosts Germany as well. This past season, he only made 5 league appearances for Benfica, but did manage to score four goals. Time will tell if Gomes will finalize the deal with whatever MLS team is interested in his services.
