D.C. United Sign Rookie Blake Brettschneider
Here’s a bit of a surprise move. Or, at least, it would have been surprising a month ago. D.C. United have signed rookie Blake Brettschneider to their roster after a fantastic preseason campaign. The forward - who can also play on the right wing - was the 11th overall pick in the MLS Supplemental Draft (because we can’t just let teams sign players who aren’t picked in the SuperDraft, why?). Most considered him a serious longshot to make the DC roster, but his impressive preseason performances have forced the hand of the management at D.C.
As good as Brettschneider has been, it’s tough to figure out where or when he’s going to play unless D.C. has some serious injury problems. Charlie Davies, Joseph Ngwenya, and Josh Wolff are all on the roster as forwards, while Andy Najar, Santino Quaranta, and Fred are probably all ahead of Brettschneider in the pecking order out on the wing. Still, if he can keep up his performances from preseason, who knows? Brettschneider might rip it up so hard in a U.S. Open Cup game that Ben Olsen has no choice but to play the guy.
